Every now and then, someone says something you might already know, yet it stops you in your tracks anyway.
This week for me, it was an editor’s note.
I was reading the monthly newsletter from my gym, Alpha Omega Performance, when owner Alyssa Brandeberry shared a concept she calls Critical Tasks. Five simple things. The same five things. Every single day for at least 28 days.
At first, I thought, Well, that’s almost too simple.
Then I realized, maybe that’s the point.
We’re all carrying around invisible checklists. Reply to the email. Fold the laundry. Schedule the appointment. Return the call. Buy the birthday gift. Remember the permission slip. Somewhere along the way, our days become a game of Whac-A-Mole, where the prize for finishing one task is, well, another task.
Sound familiar?
The irony is that we spend so much time being productive that we sometimes forget to be intentional.
Alyssa’s idea challenged me because it wasn’t about creating another to-do list. It was about identifying the few things that deserve a permanent place on the list because they make everything else better.
That made me pause.
If my life were a house, what are the five beams holding it together?
Not the urgent things. The important things.
The things that, if repeated faithfully, would quietly change the trajectory and purpose of my days.
Maybe it’s taking a walk before looking at my phone.
Maybe it’s reading ten pages of a book instead of ten minutes of social media.
Maybe it’s praying before planning.
Maybe it’s thirty uninterrupted minutes drawing with my daughter or listening to my son tell a story that somehow takes twelve unexpected turns before reaching the point. Those moments don’t produce anything measurable. But somehow, they’re the most productive investment I can make.
Health and wellness has taught me something over the years and seasons of my life.
It’s rarely one giant decision that changes your life.
It’s the tiny promises you keep to yourself.
The glass of water.
The workout you almost skipped.
The text you finally sent.
The vegetables you chose.
The conversation you decided not to rush.
The bedtime story you read even though you were tired.
Those moments seem ordinary while they’re happening. Looking back, they become the architecture of a beautiful life.
What I appreciate most about the idea of Critical Tasks is that it removes the negotiation.
No more, I’ll do it tomorrow.
No more, I’ll start Monday.
No more waiting until motivation arrives like a surprise guest.
You simply decide who you want to become, and then you let your daily habits cast the vote.
Five votes.
Every day.
Not flashy.
Not glamorous.
Just faithful.
As I thought about my own five, I smiled.
Not because I have them figured out.
But because I realized wellness isn’t found in chasing a perfect life. It’s found in returning, day after day, to the things that matter most.
We don’t drift toward our priorities.
We drift away from them.
Unless we gently anchor ourselves.
So maybe this month isn’t about accomplishing more.
Maybe it’s about repeating what matters.
Five things.
Every day.
Simple enough to remember.
Powerful enough to change a life.
Including mine.
(Thank you, Alyssa!!)
