The Good You Do May Be Forgotten, Do It Anyway

There are certain words that don’t just pass through your mind, they take root in your heart. For me, one of those has always been a quote from Mother Teresa:

“The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.

It was never between you and them anyway.”

I remember reading those words when I was young, and even then, they felt important. At the time, I may not have fully understood their depth—but I carried them. And over the years, through different seasons of life, they’ve gently guided my choices in ways I didn’t always realize.

As I think of health and wellness, I don’t just think about physical health or routines. I think about the state of my heart. I think about intention. I think about the quiet decisions we make every day—especially the ones no one sees.

The truth is, it’s easy to do good when it’s noticed. When someone says thank you. When there’s recognition, or appreciation, or even just acknowledgment. But real wellness—the kind that anchors you—comes from doing good even when it feels unseen. Even when it’s inconvenient. Even when it’s hard.

That quote has shaped how I approach my life in ways both big and small. It’s in choosing to show up for someone even when my schedule feels full. It’s in offering kindness when it may not be returned. It’s in giving my best effort, even when the outcome isn’t what I hoped for.

And it’s also in letting go.

Letting go of the need for validation. Letting go of keeping score. Letting go of wondering whether what I’m doing is “enough” in someone else’s eyes.

At the end of the day, it was never about that.

There is something incredibly freeing—and deeply grounding—about realizing that the good we do is not meant to be measured by applause. It’s meant to be given. Fully, sincerely, and without expectation.

I believe this is something all of us can hold onto. No matter where we are in life, no matter what season we’re in, we all have opportunities—every single day—to choose kindness, to give our best, to show up with intention.

And yes, sometimes it may go unnoticed. Sometimes it may feel like it didn’t make a difference.

But do it anyway.

Wellness that lasts isn’t built on recognition—it’s built on purpose. It’s built on love. It’s built on the quiet understanding that what we give to the world matters, even when we don’t see the full impact.

Whatever today holds—whether it’s a small act of kindness, a big leap of faith, or simply choosing to give your best in a moment that feels ordinary—know this:

It matters.

Do good anyway.
