Health and wellness, to me, has always been about more than just caring for our bodies—it’s about surrounding ourselves with people who inspire us to be better, who remind us that greatness is not just measured in trophies or titles, but in how we live, love, and give back. My friendship with Derrick Brooks has been one of those reminders.
Derrick Brooks is a name that will forever be synonymous with Pensacola football.
An NFL legend and hometown hero, he played 14 seasons as a linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, earning 11 Pro Bowl nominations, countless accolades, and now the honor of being named the greatest player ever to wear their jersey.
It would be remiss me if I didn’t state he did not miss ANY games during his ENTIRE 14-year NFL career, playing in every game from his rookie season through his final year. He started all but three games of his rookie season and held the NFL record for consecutive starts by a linebacker.

For all of his success on the field and his remarkable unblemished playing record, what has always struck me the most is who Derrick is as a man—a humble, grounded, and giving human being.
I’ve always admired how Derrick talks about his roots here in Pensacola.
He started playing football at just eight years old, nearly gave up after his first practice, but found the grit and perseverance to keep going thanks to a life lesson from his father: “We are not quitters in this family.”
That pivotal lesson not only shaped his career but has rippled into the lives of so many he continues to touch.
Derrick may have retired in 2009, but he never stopped showing up for this community. From giving to countless charities to his work with Sue Straughn on Communities Caring at Christmas, he has embodied the spirit of service.

As he often shares, and just recently at his Derrick Brooks Charities Golf Tournament, his mother instilled in him a heart for giving, and he has carried her legacy forward with grace.
For me, that’s true health and wellness—living in a way that honors those who raised us, while lifting others as we go!
When I hear Derrick speak about Pensacola with joy, or roll up his sleeves to serve, it reminds me why I love this city and why community matters so deeply.
It’s not just about football or even about accolades—it’s about giving our kids a chance to succeed, about building something lasting, about making sure no one is left behind.

As I reflect on my own journey, I see how important it is to model those values in my life too—whether it’s through serving on the PTO, coaching my kids, or simply being there for a friend. Derrick Brooks is living proof that true legends don’t just play the game—they change lives long after the final whistle blows!
So as we celebrate Derrick being named the greatest Buccaneer of all time, I also celebrate the man behind the jersey: the mentor, the giver, the neighbor, and the friend.
His legacy inspires me daily to keep striving, keep serving, and keep saying yes to the work that matters most!
At the end of the day, health and wellness isn’t just about how strong we are—it’s about how much love, service, and resilience we carry with us through every season of life. And Derrick Brooks embodies that better than anyone I know!
