Some of the deepest wounds people carry are the ones we never see.

Behind everyday smiles, busy schedules, school drop-offs, and conversations with friends are stories of survival that often go unspoken.

Creating a community where people feel safe, respected, and supported is one of the most meaningful forms of wellness we can offer one another. When people feel safe, they can breathe a little deeper, heal a little more fully, and live a little more freely.

The reality is that sexual assault touches more lives than we often realize. It could be our neighbor, our best friend, a member of our book club, a colleague, someone we simply passed in the grocery store, you, me.

Survivors don’t always wear their stories where we can see them. Many carry their experiences quietly, choosing privacy as part of their healing—and that choice deserves respect and compassion.

Every story matters. And whether someone shares their story or never speaks it aloud, their experience is real. Silence does not mean something didn’t happen. It does not lessen the impact of trauma. It does not erase the incredible strength it takes to keep showing up in everyday life. In fact, that quiet strength is something worth honoring.

To me, wellness is not only about caring for ourselves—it’s about creating a culture of care around us. It’s about choosing kindness, believing people when they speak, and offering support without judgment. When communities lead with empathy, healing becomes possible not just for individuals, but for everyone around them. When we care for one another this way, we strengthen the emotional and social health of our entire community.

I truly believe we are strongest when we stand together. When we lift one another up, listen with open hearts, and create spaces where people know they are valued and protected, we build healthier communities for all of us. Wellness grows where compassion lives.

If you or someone you know needs support, there are compassionate people ready to help.

Here in our community, the Gulf Coast Sexual Assault Program provides advocacy and a 24-hour hotline for survivors at 866-585-2040, and Lakeview Center’s Victim Services offers confidential counseling and support for those impacted by trauma.

Nationally, the RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline is available 24 hours a day at 800-656-HOPE (4673) or through online chat at RAINN.org.

Reaching out can feel difficult, but no one should have to carry their story alone.

I stand with victims.

I stand with survivors.

And I stand for communities where compassion, dignity, and care guide how we treat one another each day.
