Pensacola Police Department names first female captain

Kristin Brown will become the first female captain in the Pensacola Police Department’s 196-year history, following a promotion by new police chief Tommi Lyter.

The move was among Lyter’s first in his first full day in the job. Pensacola city council members approved Lyter’s nomination as police chief at their meeting Thursday night.

A 21-year veteran of the department, Brown has served with Uniform Patrol, Vice & Narcotics, Crisis Negotiation Team, Investigations, and as a field training officer. This isn’t the first time Brown has made departmental history; she was the first female lieutenant in PPD history when she moved into that role two years ago.

Lyter also announced the promotion of Lt. Kevin Christman to captain, and sergeants John Austin, Matthew Coverdale, and James Reese to lieutenant. Officers Maria Landy, David Hausner, and Dylan Stackpole were also promoted to sergeant.

The promotions will take effect on May 22, officials said.
