A federal grant will help Pensacola International Airport acquire a new explosives detection K-9.
The City of Pensacola has been awarded $15,395 through the Fiscal Year 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program to acquire and deploy the specially trained dog. The K-9 will be stationed at the Airport and handled by a Pensacola Police Department officer.
Having a dedicated explosives detection team on site will enhance the airport’s existing security measures, support a faster response to unattended items and other potential concerns, and help minimize disruptions for passengers and airport operations.
“Safety is at the heart of everything we do,” Airport Executive Director Matt Coughlin said, “After the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved K-9 Jett, (U.S.) Senator (Ashley) Moody’s staff reached out to us and presented this opportunity through the DOJ’s grant program. Their help in our attempt to not only reconstitute K9 Jett’s tradecraft but to remain steadfast to his legacy was heartfelt. We are incredibly grateful to Ann Sharpsteen and Senator Moody for supporting this team effort to bring such a valuable resource to the Airport.”

In addition to supporting daily airport operations, the new K-9 team will be available to assist neighboring law enforcement agencies during high-profile events, bomb threats or other situations requiring specialized detection capabilities. This mutual-aid role will make the team an important public safety asset for Pensacola and communities throughout Northwest Florida.
Details about the K-9 and its introduction to the community will be announced following the canine’s acquisition, training and deployment.
