Three years ago, Coastal Cat Cafe needed a home.
The concept was new to Pensacola, the right space wasn’t easy to find, and convincing a landlord that cats and commercial real estate could happily coexist took a little explaining.
“I remember the journey when we were looking for a space for a cat cafe,” said Danny Zimmern, commercial real estate agent with the Zimmern Team. “It was hard to explain it to everybody.”
“Oh, for sure,” owner Adrienne reminded him. “The landlords were all skeptical.”
Eventually, they found the right one.
Zimmern helped Adrienne secure the space at 1508 West Garden Street that would become Coastal Cat Cafe, and what started as an unfamiliar concept has since become a beloved local business and, more importantly, a temporary home for hundreds of cats waiting for permanent ones.
On Friday, Coastal Cat Cafe celebrated perhaps its biggest milestone yet, its 500th adoption.
For longtime Local Pulse readers, the number makes the story especially sweet.
When we first visited Coastal Cat Cafe in 2024, Adrienne told us that her goal was simple, to help as many cats as possible.
At the cafe, adoptable cats are given a cage-free environment where they can play, socialize and interact naturally with visitors. People can come simply to spend time with the cats, although sometimes, as Adrienne has learned, those visits turn into something more.
“People come in, they come to hang out with cats, and sometimes they fall in love with them,” she said.
Apparently, they’ve fallen in love quite a few times.
Adrienne estimates the cafe now sees around 14 to 15 adoptions in an average month, with some months climbing even higher. And while saying goodbye isn’t always easy, that’s exactly what the cafe was built to do.
“I’m a little sad sometimes,” Adrienne admitted of seeing the cats leave, “but it’s all for a good purpose.”
500 homes later, it’s time for a bigger one
There was another reason for Danny’s recent visit to the cafe.
Coastal Cat Cafe is growing and once again, Adrienne has enlisted the person who helped her find its first location.
“We’re definitely looking to grow the business now,” Adrienne said. “We would love to have a bigger location so we can have more cats.”
This time around, the wish list looks a little different. Adrienne has had three years to learn what makes a space work for both the people who visit and the cats who call it their temporary home.
More windows for bird watching would be nice. More room to play. More things to climb on and explore.
And, of course, more cats.
“More cats would be better,” Adrienne said. “More people to visit them would be better.”
For Danny, helping Coastal Cat Cafe find its next space is a full-circle commercial real estate assignment and one that looks quite different from many of the deals he works on.
“I’m used to dealing with really big, wide-open environments where it’s all about the math and the size and everything else,” he said. “This place is all about the happiness.”

And that’s part of what has made the cafe special.
“It’s just fun to have been a part of something that brings so much happiness to everybody,” Danny said.
Three years ago, the challenge was finding a landlord willing to take a chance on an unusual idea.
Today, Coastal Cat Cafe has 500 reasons to say it worked.
And now, as Adrienne and Danny begin looking for what’s next, the goal remains remarkably similar to the one Adrienne shared with us when we first told her story,
More room, more cats, more people falling in love, and hopefully, a whole lot more adoptions.
