In the heart of downtown Pensacola, Rusted Arrow has become a go-to destination for thoughtful gifts, seasonal décor, and a shopping experience that feels a little more personal than most.
But behind the carefully curated displays and welcoming atmosphere is a story that makes the shop especially meaningful this time of year, a mother and daughter who turned a shared dream into a thriving business.
A Dream That Started Years Ago
Long before Rusted Arrow opened its doors in 2017, Samantha and her mom, Ruth, had already imagined what it might look like to run a shop together.
Growing up, the two bonded over traveling and exploring small boutiques along the way. That habit slowly turned into a dream.
“Ever since I was young… we’d always say one day it would be fun if we could do this together,” Samantha said.
That idea stayed in the background for years until Samantha began flipping and refinishing furniture in South Florida. What started as a creative side hustle quickly gained traction, giving both of them confidence that a larger concept could work.
Ruth, who had spent years working for Hallmark and later in merchandising with Home Depot, saw the potential from a different perspective.
“That’s where my love for gifts came in,” she said. “And then learning the business side later really helped when we opened the store.”
Finding Their Way to Pensacola
The path to opening Rusted Arrow wasn’t exactly direct.
Samantha’s early career actually took her in a completely different direction, working as a dolphin trainer and later at the Georgia Aquarium. But after deciding to step away from that field and start a family, she returned to Florida and began building her furniture business.
At the same time, the idea of opening a storefront continued to grow.
Pensacola wasn’t even on the radar at first. That changed after a visit during the holidays.
“We came at Christmas… Palafox was lit up like a Hallmark movie,” Samantha said. “And I was like, why have we never been here before?”
Not long after, the right space opened up downtown—and everything seemed to fall into place.
“It felt like a God thing,” she said. “It was scary, but every step just kept lining up.”
Taking the Leap Together
For Ruth, leaving behind a more traditional career path to jump into a new business wasn’t an easy decision.
“I was a little concerned about it,” she said. “But the question was, what’s the worst that could happen?”
That mindset helped push the idea into action, and in 2017, Rusted Arrow officially opened.
Like many small businesses, it didn’t take long to realize that success would require adaptation. What started with a strong focus on refinished furniture has since evolved into a gift-heavy boutique filled with seasonal items, home décor, and unique finds.
“We’ve kind of pivoted over the years,” Samantha said. “You learn what people love, and you grow with that.”
Balancing Business and Family
Working together as mother and daughter has added a unique dynamic to the business—one that has required both growth and intentional balance.
“We’ve always been close,” Ruth said. “But working together, you gain a whole different level of respect for each other.”
At the same time, they’ve learned how to separate work from family life when needed.
“Family is first. No matter what,” Ruth said. “The business is important, but that always comes first.”
Samantha agreed, adding that communication has been key.
“You learn how to work through things and not leave them unresolved,” she said.
Creating an Experience, Not Just a Store
Ask what makes Rusted Arrow stand out, and both point to something beyond the products themselves.
“The thing I’m most proud of is our customer experience,” Ruth said. “We treat people like family, and that’s what keeps them coming back.”
From the layout of the store to the music, scents, and overall atmosphere, everything is designed with intention.
“Our goal is for people to come in and press pause,” Samantha said. “Life is busy—this should be a place where you can slow down and feel inspired.”
That philosophy has helped the shop carve out a strong identity in a growing downtown retail scene.
Built by the Community
As newcomers to Pensacola, earning trust didn’t happen overnight.
“It took a while for the community to really get to know us,” Ruth said. “But once they did, they showed up in a big way.”
One of the biggest turning points came through hosting workshops and events, which brought people into the store and created a deeper connection.
That support proved especially important during difficult moments, including the challenges of COVID-19.
“We had just expanded… and then had to shut everything down,” Samantha said.
Instead of pulling back, they leaned into creativity—offering online orders, local delivery, and maintaining a positive presence online.
“We tried to keep everything uplifting,” she said. “And people responded to that.”
A Perfect Stop for Mother’s Day
As Mother’s Day approaches, Rusted Arrow is leaning into what it does best—helping customers find thoughtful, personalized gifts.
“We can really create something custom and special,” Samantha said. “You can come in, tell us your budget, and we’ll take care of the rest.”
From seasonal items to unique gift ideas and in-store events leading up to the holiday, the shop has become a natural stop for anyone looking to celebrate the moms in their life.
Looking Ahead
Nine years in, the focus remains simple: continue growing while staying rooted in what made the business special in the first place.
“We love where we are,” Ruth said. “We love this community.”
And for Samantha, the excitement comes with every new season.
“There’s always something new coming,” she said. “That’s what keeps it fun.”
For a business built on connection, creativity, and family, that sense of momentum feels less like expansion—and more like a continuation of the dream that started years ago.
