For Jaromy Kuhl, this one started in 2021.

Designed in a striking Y-shape, the 55,000-square-foot facility mirrors the way neurons connect in the human brain: interconnected, responsive, alive with possibility.

Before Jaromy was mapping out interdisciplinary research hubs, Kuhl was mapping something else entirely: graphs.

A professor in mathematics and statistics, Kuhl’s research has focused on graph theory, studying structures like bipartite graphs, Latin squares, and the kinds of problems that explore how connections form, stretch, and sometimes break. His work dives into coloring graphs, extremal problems, Hamiltonicity (finding the longest possible cycles), and the intricacies of the Tutte polynomial.

He’s spent two decades teaching, researching, leading departments, managing budgets, mentoring students, and presenting his work everywhere from China to Australia.
His research has been published in journals like Graphs and Combinatorics, Annals of Combinatorics, and Discrete Applied Mathematics.
But somewhere along the way, his focus expanded.

As provost, the chief academic officer responsible for shaping the university’s academic vision, he’s been quietly working behind the scenes to bring this idea to life for years.
Not months, but years. Since 2021, he’s been asking a deceptively simple question: What would happen if we stopped separating disciplines and started connecting them?
The answer now stands in drawing form as The Synapse. A place where artificial intelligence doesn’t sit in one corner, cybersecurity in another, and engineering down the hall, but instead, they collide and collaborate.
Inside The Synapse, you won’t just find labs. “You’ll find momentum,” he shared.
The building will house two powerhouse programs, the Center for Computational Intelligence and the Center for Cybersecurity and AI. Both are already making waves and are about to level up.
The computational work happening here isn’t theoretical. It’s tackling real-world challenges, healthcare, energy, environmental monitoring, and even national defense.
And the cybersecurity and AI center is already nationally recognized. Soon, it will move from downtown Pensacola onto campus, creating even stronger connections between students, faculty, and industry partners.
So, in short, a mathematician who built his career studying connections is now leading the charge as UWF builds a space designed to accelerate them.
Kuhl is quick to point out what matters most. And it is not square footage.
It’s the students. Those who will walk into this building and not just learn about artificial intelligence but work with it.

Because it will be a pipeline of highly skilled graduates entering industries that are shaping the future of our state and beyond.
It’s sending a signal that Pensacola isn’t just keeping up, it’s stepping forward.
Speaking of stepping forward, President Manny Diaz Jr. called it “transformational.” And with him at the helm of UWF, the movement every single day seems to be led with the thought of good transformation.
But transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It happens because someone like Jaromy Kuhl decides to stay with an idea long enough to see it through, navigate the funding, the planning, and the countless conversations.
To hold the vision steady until everyone else can see it too.
