Three-day camp provides autistic youth with an inclusive sailing experience at Pensacola Yacht Club.
Spectrum Sailing is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing inclusive sailing opportunities for autistic youth. In partnership with the Pensacola Yacht Club and Satori Foundation, Spectrum Sailing will host a free three-day sailing camp for local autistic youth from April 10–12, 2026.
Now in its third year in Pensacola, the camp is part of Spectrum Sailing’s national effort to expand access to inclusive sailing experiences for autistic youth. In 2026, Spectrum Sailing will host programs in 13 cities across the United States, serving more than 260 autistic youth at no cost to families.
Spectrum Sailing was born out of necessity after Founder and Executive Director, Scott Herman, faced challenges enrolling his autistic son in sailing camp. After encountering this gap, Herman started his own inclusive sailing camp in South Carolina. What began as a single pilot program has since grown into the only national autism sailing organization, serving over 700 autistic youth and families to date.
“Sailing has been a lifelong sport for me. The relationships and opportunities sailing has brought to my life are endless,” said Herman. “Those relationships have helped make Spectrum Sailing a reality. It is amazing I was able to share the sport of sailing with my son, but now I get to share it with kids across the country.”
During this three-day camp, participants will learn the fundamentals of sailing through hands-on instruction with trained instructors and volunteers. Sailors will practice steering, sail control, teamwork, and essential water safety skills while building confidence and independence on the water.
For many participants, this program provides their first opportunity to take part in a recreational program that truly accommodates their needs.
“Spectrum Sailing is about more than just sailing,” said Herman. “We meet kids where they are and help them discover what they’re capable of.”
