There’s a difference between hearing about something and sitting across from the people who’ve lived it.
I recently had the chance to sit down with Jere Hartman and Chris Farrington, two veterans who aren’t just talking about resilience, they’ve tested it in one of the most extreme ways possible. In June 2024, they completed what’s widely considered the world’s toughest row, a grueling open-ocean journey from Monterey, California to Kauai, Hawaii.
And now, that same mindset is coming to Pensacola.
On May 2–3, Courser Racing will launch its first Weekend Row Package off the coast of Pensacola, bringing three veterans into a fully sponsored ocean rowing experience. Every expense is covered. The goal isn’t just to get them on the water, it’s to give them something many veterans say they miss most after service: purpose, connection, and a team to rely on.
Ocean rowing isn’t just about endurance. If anything, that’s the easy part.
What Jere and Chris described to me wasn’t just the physical toll, it was the mental shift. Out there, stripped of distractions, everything becomes immediate. You rely on the people beside you. You stay present. You show up, over and over again.
And in that environment, something starts to change.
“Out there, in that shared suffering, we started breaking down the weight we carried home from combat. We started talking like normal people instead of ‘warriors.’ The act dropped. Humanity came back,” said Hartman
That line stuck with me.
Because what Courser Racing is building isn’t just an experience, it’s a reset.
A lot of veterans talk about the transition out of the military as losing something intangible: structure, community, momentum. What Courser Racing does is recreate that, but in a way that feels earned, not assigned.
By putting veterans back into a mission-driven environment where teamwork matters, where people are counting on you, where the challenge is real, it brings back that sense of belonging. And more importantly, it reminds participants that their story didn’t peak during their years in service. There’s still more ahead.
That was something both Jere and Chris emphasized. The hardest part isn’t the ocean. It’s staying engaged in your own life. Being open to growth. Letting yourself step into something new.

This isn’t a one-off event, it’s the launch of a broader initiative to create adventure-based experiences for veterans across the country. Experiences designed to build resilience, strengthen mental health, and reconnect people to purpose in a tangible way.
