After more than five decades of dedication to public transportation in Escambia County, longtime Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) bus operator Willie Carter, Jr., is retiring at the end of this month, closing the chapter on a remarkable career defined by consistency, safety, and service to the community.
Carter, who began his career with ECAT in 1974, has spent nearly 52 years helping residents of Escambia County get where they need to go. Over the course of his tenure, he became more than just a bus driver; he became a familiar and trusted presence for thousands of passengers who relied on him daily.
To honor his extraordinary career, Escambia County and ECAT hosted a retirement ceremony on Wednesday, April 15, at the ECAT facility. During the ceremony, District 3 Commissioner Lumon May presented Carter with an official proclamation, recognizing his decades of service and his lasting impact on the community.
Carter’s career is marked not only by longevity, but by an exceptional commitment to safety. For 45 consecutive years, he logged an astonishing 2,817,360 miles without a single accident or incident, an achievement that sets a high bar in the transit industry and speaks to his professionalism behind the wheel. His dedication has made him a role model within ECAT and a standard-bearer for what it means to serve the public with care and responsibility.
In recent years, Carter’s contributions have been formally recognized by the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners. In October 2024, he reached an incredible milestone of 50 years of service. The following month, he received a proclamation from the board, and in December 2024, he was named Employee of the Month, further highlighting the respect and admiration he has earned from both colleagues and county leadership.
The significance of Carter’s career extends far beyond the walls of the ECAT facility. His daily work has quietly shaped the routines of countless residents, from early morning commuters to students and families, all of whom have benefited from his steady presence over the years.
For ECAT and the community it serves, Willie Carter, Jr. will be remembered as a symbol of dedication, reliability, and excellence, proof that even the most routine jobs can have an extraordinary impact when done with pride and purpose.
