We all have a mantra, famous quote, or the tried and true advice instilled by our elders long ago. It’s the wisdom, the wives tale, or maybe the latest trend on Tik Tok that bring us comfort when times get tough. I’ll read a moving quote, hear a speaker say something profound, or see an encouraging sign while driving around.
No matter how much worldly wisdom I could consume in a day, a moment in God’s word always proves to be more impressive than anything I can explain. He put a few words on my heart to talk about with you today.
Gods voice isn’t audible for me. He doesn’t visit in my dreams. And so far, I’ve not had a walk in with one of His angels. One way God does use to communicate with me, is through His word.
I’m two years and eighty four days behind on my “Read the bible in a year plan”. I may come across the verse of the day on the YouVersion app, I’ll flip to a random chapter, or search a biblical topic on Google. Needless to say my routine with the word is all over the place. I’m glad it exists.
Without time in the word, “I’m hoping for the best”, or “trusting the process”. Optimism is helpful, though there is not much power behind it. I’ve come across verses and chapters that have given me life. Words that somehow dig deep into my soul, nourish me, teach me, and guide me along.
These scriptures have changed me. The more I started to read, the more I realized how unprepared I would be for the impact Gods word could have on me.
I’ve been curious about God since I was young. I’ve always had a deep knowing that we were created by something beyond us. During my childhood we’d pray here and there. Mom talked a lot about angels from what I remember, and my dad would tell us that if we were good people, we’d have a good chance of getting into heaven.
As all children do, I grew out of what my parents said about most things and started to develop my own perceptions.
Perception is defined as the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. Awareness fascinates me. God designed us to learn more, peel back the layers, and have limitless access to experiencing His creation.
God has made it so we have multiple ways we can encounter Him. Your eyes, ears, taste buds, touch, and noses. We are even given the choice (in most cases) on how we activate said senses.
My walk with God has been a journey, as I’m sure you would say the same about yours. It may be a walk cut short, you may be running the marathon, or it’s a trip you’ve been telling yourself you’d go on but haven’t saved the money yet. One thing I can testify with all of me, is that the ground you cover with God is not shaky. His truth is a firm foundation, and His word one we can stand on.
Even though God’s word starts with “In the beginning”, you can pick up anywhere in the text and start your journey. God is good, all the time. Especially in the way He meets us wherever we are.
I’ve gathered 5 verses together that I’ve read time and time again. At this point, when I search my memory bank for wisdom, support, or comfort; one of these 5 verses will surface first. My encouragement to you is to start somewhere. My prayer is that these verses make you aware of the love and care God has for us. He isn’t only the God that created us. He is the God who speaks to us, hears us, and wants to have a relationship with us.
“And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”
“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.”
“Always be joyful.”
As you go about the rest of your week, I challenge you to add a few minutes to your existing time with God. Or do it differently. Ask a friend to read with you, start a new devotion. Mix it up a little in the way you “normally” do things and see if the change actually changes you. God doesn’t cap out on ways He can communicate, and something tells me He has a word for you.
