On a stretch of Palafox Street where new ideas meet old Pensacola charm, Monkee’s of Pensacola has quietly opened its doors and begun building something deeper than a retail space.
Yes, there are carefully curated racks of clothing, thoughtfully selected accessories, and gifts sourced with intention. But for owner Rylee Smith, the vision has never been centered on products alone. From the beginning, the goal has been to create a place where people feel connected.
“I want to have a place where mothers, daughters, and granddaughters can come and all find something.”

That idea sits at the heart of Monkee’s. It is not just about style or trends. It is about shared experiences. It is about generations shopping side by side, conversations in dressing rooms, and moments that extend beyond the transaction.
Rylee’s journey to opening Monkee’s was not a straight line. After eight years in pharmaceutical sales and a background in hospitality, she found herself drawn toward something more personal. Fashion had always been an interest, but more importantly, she was passionate about helping people feel confident in themselves.
That passion became the foundation.
After visiting another Monkee’s location and seeing the model firsthand, Rylee realized she could bring that same energy to Pensacola. What followed was a year-long process of planning, learning, and searching for the right space. Finding the perfect location on Palafox proved to be both the biggest hurdle and the most important step.

Finding the right location was one of the most challenging parts of the journey. From the beginning, Rylee knew she wanted to be on Palafox Street, right in the heart of downtown, where the energy of Pensacola is felt most. But the search was not simple. She laughed that she felt a bit like Goldilocks, walking through spaces that were either too big, too small, or just not quite right. Each option came close, but none truly fit the vision she had in mind. That changed when 192 N Palafox St became available. Almost immediately, she knew this was it. The space felt right, the timing aligned, and everything finally came together in a way that made sense.
Since opening on February 5th, Monkee’s has already begun to find its rhythm within the community. Inside the store, every detail has been carefully considered. From the layout to the dressing rooms to the overall feel of the space, the goal is to create an experience that feels welcoming and elevated at the same time.
Beyond the location, Rylee was just as thoughtful about what the space would feel like once people stepped inside. “Everything in the space is intentional. From the rugs to the art on the walls,” Rylee explains. Every detail was chosen with purpose, creating an environment that feels both elevated and approachable. As a local herself, she designed the store with the Pensacola community in mind, focusing on what resonates with the women who live, work, and spend time downtown. It is not just about aesthetics, but about creating a space that feels familiar, welcoming, and uniquely connected to the city.
That moment, when someone walks out feeling better than when they walked in, is what drives the day-to-day.
And often, the impact stretches far beyond the store itself.
“My favorite thing is to see people that I have built a relationship with outside of the store.”
That is where the vision becomes reality. When customers become familiar faces. When conversations turn into relationships. When a boutique becomes part of someone’s routine, not just their wardrobe.
Monkee’s is also intentional about supporting the local community in tangible ways. Alongside national brands, Rylee has incorporated locally sourced products and giftables, giving other Pensacola businesses a place on her shelves. It is a small but meaningful way to keep the spirit of the community woven into everything the store offers.
Looking ahead, Rylee’s focus is simple: continue learning about her customers, continue refining the selection, and continue building a space where people want to spend time.
Because in the end, Monkee’s is not just about what you buy. It is about how you feel when you are there and who you share it with. In a downtown that continues to grow and evolve, Monkee’s of Pensacola is already proving that the strongest businesses are not just built on products.
They are built on people.
