There’s a new team member at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola and she walks in on four legs.
Her name is Joy and after spending time with her this morning I can confirm the name fits perfectly.
Joy is Sacred Heart’s newest facility dog, assigned specifically to comfort adult patients and families inside the Emergency Room and Level I Trauma Center.
She started in November, after an anonymous donor made a generous gift to the hospital to help bring her here and it’s already easy to see how much that one act of kindness has meant.
Joy is part of the Sacred Paws program and makes daily rounds with her handler, Donna Holland, Director of Nursing for Emergency Services. Together, they visit patients, families, and staff, offering a little calm in the middle of what can be a really overwhelming place.
Today, I had the chance to meet Donna and tag along while Joy made her rounds. I watched her step into a patient’s room and the whole mood shift.
Nurses smiled.
Interns stopped what they were doing.
Doctors bent down for a quick scratch behind the ears.
Families laughed.
It wasn’t anything big or dramatic, just small, quiet moments. A hand resting on her back. A deep breath. A soft smile.
But it was heartwarming to watch and honestly the best start to my day.
Seeing the comfort she brought, not just to patients, but to the nurses, doctors, and staff too felt really special.
Ascension Sacred Heart is one of only 11 Level I Trauma Centers in Florida and the only one in our region, caring for some of the most complex and critical cases every day. Which makes Joy’s presence more than just sweet, it’s meaningful.
