Downtown Pensacola is coming together today to honor the life, legacy, and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as the 37th Annual MLK Day Parade steps off at 11 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2026, at the intersection of Spring and Garden Streets.
This year’s theme “With Unity, We Won’t Turn Back” feels especially fitting. More than a parade, this event has long been known as “the people’s parade,” a tradition rooted in community pride, shared history, and forward momentum. What began in 1987 with just a small group of dedicated organizers has grown into one of Pensacola’s largest and most meaningful annual gatherings, drawing thousands of participants and spectators downtown each year.
One of the things that makes Pensacola’s MLK Parade uniquely our own is its Mardi Gras-style energy. Colorful floats, decorated vehicles, school groups, churches, civic organizations, local businesses, and elected leaders fill the route, each adding their own creative interpretation of Dr. King’s message. The result is a celebration that’s joyful and vibrant while still grounded in purpose: unity, justice, equality, and hope.
Over nearly four decades, the parade has become a powerful platform for recognizing the cultural, social, and economic contributions of Pensacola’s citizens. It brings together generations children on the curb catching beads and candy, elders who remember the early days of the march, and community leaders carrying the torch forward. It’s a reminder that honoring Dr. King’s dream isn’t just about reflection, it’s about participation.
The mission remains simple: to keep Dr. King’s message alive by uniting the community in a shared celebration of love, peace, and justice inspiring future generations and strengthening the bonds that make Pensacola home.
2026 Grand Marshal: Commissioner Lumon May
This year’s parade is led by Escambia County Commissioner Lumon May, serving as Grand Marshal. Known throughout the community for his long-standing dedication to public service and youth advocacy, May has represented District 3 since 2012 and has served multiple terms as chairman of the Escambia County Commission.
A Pensacola native and Woodham High graduate, May has spent more than 25 years supporting youth sports, mentorship programs, and community development initiatives. His selection as Grand Marshal honors his continued commitment to strengthening neighborhoods and expanding opportunities for the next generation.
