Downtown Pensacola will step into full Mardi Gras mode on Saturday, January 3, 2026, as Pensacola Mardi Gras hosts its 15th annual Kick-Off Celebration, officially launching the 2026 Pensacola Mardi Gras Season presented by the Ice Flyers Foundation.
The Kick-Off Celebration marks the first public gathering of the season and transforms the heart of downtown in a walkable, immersive Mardi Gras experience, bringing together krewes, floats, royalty, civic leaders, and the community for an evening rooted in tradition and pageantry.
Ceremonial elements of the evening include the Blessing of the Krewes, led by Father Patrick LaPointe, and the Royal Processional featuring elected officials, civic leaders, clergy, Krewe Royalty, and the 2026 Priscus Royalty from the Krewe of Gatsby Girls –Queen Truli Hartley and Queen Melissa Wright. Town Crier Marty Stanovich, joined this year by Mrs. Town Crier Jo Stanovich, will formally proclaim each Krewe and welcome them into the 2026 Mardi Gras Season.
Outside of Seville, approximately 35 Mardi Gras floats will be staged in a stationary display along Jefferson and Palafox Streets. This format, often called a “parade in reverse” allows attendees to stroll the route, interact directly with Krewe members, and experience the floats at close range rather than watching them pass by. Each participating float and Krewe will be individually blessed, formally proclaimed into the season, and have their royalty introduced officially to the community.
The evening begins inside Seville Quarter in Phineas Phoggs. The doors open at 5:00 pm to the public and a special VIP Reception for invited guests will take place upstairs in Phineas Phoggs. Opening Ceremonies will follow on the Phineas Phoggs stage after 6:30 pm.
As the evening unfolds, Krewe Royalty and local dignitaries will merge into a growing second line processional led by live brass band music. The procession will travel through the streets and conclude at the steps of the Artel Gallery at the corner of Government and Palafox Streets, where dignitaries, royalty, and the public will gather for the ceremonial cutting of the Community King Cake provided by J’s Bakery & Catering.
This year’s Kick-Off Celebration also marks a notable moment for Downtown Pensacola as it is the final major public celebration on Palafox Street prior to the start of the Reimagine Palafox construction project, scheduled to begin on Monday, January 5. There will be special remarks from local dignitaries as the community celebrates on the historic street for the last time in its current state.
Street closures on Saturday will begin at approximately 3:00 pm, with full closures in place by 4:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
