In Pace, Florida, where strip malls and chain stores dominate the landscape, a whimsical mobile bookstore is carving out a space for stories and serenity. ‘Nook and Quill,’ a charming trailer-turned-library helmed by passionate entrepreneur Shelby Carter, rolled into town in August 2025.
Shelby, originally from Ohio, traded crisp Midwest winters for the humid embrace of the Florida Panhandle in July 2018. As she explored her new home, something felt missing. “There weren’t enough local bookstores in Pace,” Shelby recalls during a recent chat at one of her pop-up spots. “People love books. We need this.” Her words echo a simple truth: in a digital age flooded with screens, the tactile joy of flipping pages remains irreplaceable.
The idea for ‘Nook and Quill’ struck like a plot twist in one of her favorite fantasy novels. Just seven days after the epiphany hit, Shelby purchased a trailer and began transforming it into a rolling haven for literature. To some, it might seem impulsive—a snap decision fueled by wanderlust or whimsy. But Shelby is anything but hasty. She was focused and determined, She saw a need in the Pace and Milton communities for a spot where folks could discover books without driving miles to big-box stores.
What sets ‘Nook and Quill’ apart isn’t just the books—it’s the vibe. You’ll find the trailer at places like Alyssa’s Gift Market, community events, or tucked beside Revival Coffee Company on a sunny afternoon. Patrons sip iced lattes from nearby coffee shops while browsing, often striking up conversations that turn strangers into friends.
Shelby’s ambitions stretch beyond the trailer’s confines. With success mounting—steady sales and glowing word-of-mouth—she’s scouting brick-and-mortar locations. “I’m looking for a permanent home, even though we only just finished the trailer,” she confides with a laugh. She’s eyeing spots along Highway 98, where both Pace and Milton residents can find her easily. Challenges loom, of course, but Shelby remains focused and driven to overcome them.
As ‘Nook and Quill’ navigates its inaugural year, Shelby remains its beating heart. From Ohio transplant to trailblazing bookseller, her journey reminds us that the best stories often start with a single, determined step—or in this case, a trailer hitch. Whether you’re a die-hard fantasy fan or a romance devotee seeking your next swoon-worthy read, Shelby is inviting you in.
