“Give a woman the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” For local Pensacolian, and owner of Colette Boutique, Paula James, that quote feels less like a saying and more like a calling.
Fashion has been woven into Paula’s life since childhood.
“Even as a little girl, I was playing dress-up in my mom’s closet,” she laughed when we sat down to talk about her journey. “I’ve always been enamored with models and the creativity of fashion. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to do something in this world, not just wear it, but live it.”
After earning her degree in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising in Atlanta, Paula packed her bags for New York City in 2002 — moving there on a Sunday and starting her first job the very next day at the Giorgio Armani flagship store. What followed was a whirlwind of experiences: an assistant buyer position at The New York Look, a stint with Saks, and eventually a shift into the wholesale side of the fashion industry.
“Opening my own store has always been in the back of my mind,” Paula said. “After years in New York, it just felt like the next natural step.”
When she returned home to Pensacola in 2014, Paula spent nearly a decade working part-time at Duh for Garden and Home, all while quietly observing a gap in the local retail scene. What started as a shoes and handbag collection, soon became a bigger vision.
“I saw an opportunity to fulfill my dreams and realized I wanted to bring something fresh to Pensacola. A boutique that blends fashion-forward pieces with that effortless, coastal-cool style local women love.”
That realization became Colette Boutique. A name inspired by both Parisian elegance and personal meaning.
“I’ve always loved everything French,” Paula shared. “There was a concept store in Paris by the name of Colette that I absolutely fell in love with years ago while visiting the city of lights. Colette was the Bergdorf Goodman of Paris.
The name felt feminine yet strong, and it also happens to be the name of my daughter. So it’s really a love letter to her, too.”
Nestled on Jefferson Street, Colette is opening just steps away from some of downtown Pensacola’s favorite restaurants and shops, a location Paula says felt serendipitous.
“Jefferson is growing so fast,” she said. “There are new apartments, new hotels, new restaurants. The city is having a real moment, and I feel so fortunate to be part of it.”
Inside, shoppers can expect a thoughtfully curated mix of women’s shoes, clothing, resort wear, accessories, jewelry, and giftable items, a reflection of Paula’s own classic-meets-modern style.
“I want Colette to be a place that feels completely approachable,” Paula said. “A place that has something for every woman. I love helping women find pieces that make them feel confident, beautiful and that embrace the woman they are and the woman they are becoming.”
Colette isn’t designed for one type of shopper, it’s designed for every woman who loves expressing herself through style.
“From high school and college students to mothers and daughters who love to shop together. It’s meant to be welcoming, fun, and full of discovery.”
As Colette open its doors this month, Paula is celebrating with giveaways on Colette’s social media pages and a Grand Opening party in the coming weeks.
“This store isn’t just about clothes,” she said. “It’s about connection, between women, between generations, between a city that’s growing and the people who make it beautiful.”
This morning, Saturday, November 8th, the doors unlock at 10 AM, welcoming you into Colette’s first chapter at 160 S. Jefferson Street. To mark the moment, every piece is 10% off today — a little thank-you for being part of the beginning. Follow @colettepensacola for Grand Opening party and upcoming sales details next month.
