So I know what you’re thinking: It’s too early to talk about Christmas, but hear me out. For some people, Christmas doesn’t start until they see Santa’s float glide by on the streets of New York City at the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. For others, it starts at 12:01 a.m. on November 1st. I’m not here to change anyone’s mind about the beginning of Christmas—it will forever be the great debate of our century. However, I am here to tell you that there are a few Christmas events that take place in November that you don’t want to miss.
Maybe you are like me and try to avoid consumerism at Christmastime, instead recreating the childhood Christmas magic you had when you were young. To do this, I get out and experience some of the beautiful things about Christmas—like the lights, the music, and the simple things. I have put together a list of 5 things you can do to get an early start on Christmas. Each of these events has a November start date. Some end before December; others continue until after Christmas.
Winterfest Nov 21 & 23 Downtown Pensacola (Also December 5–7, 12, 14, 19–24)
Winterfest provides interactive trolley tours around the city, immersing the audience in the story as you ride along. While there, you can get a photo with Santa or the Grinch, as well as enjoy other activities for the whole family. Visit https://pensacolawinterfest.org/ to plan your night.
Palafox Holiday Market Wednesday 4–8 p.m., Nov 19 Downtown Pensacola (Also December 3, 10, 17)
Nothing says a Hallmark Christmas movie like a street market lit up by Christmas lights. If you are familiar with the Palafox Market on Saturday mornings, this is very similar—however, it’s on a Wednesday night with a warm jacket and maybe a hot cocoa, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Who knows, maybe you will have a “meet-cute” there and it becomes the beginning of your Hallmark Christmas movie. ‘Rain’ – A Beatles Xmas Tribute Nov 19 The Saenger Theatre
The Beatles don’t scream “Christmas,” but this event will change your mind. A nostalgic evening that will bring together holiday favorites and the sounds of the Beatles. Christmas Crafts and Drafts Nov 30 Coastal County Brewery (Also December 7)
Imagine a Sunday afternoon on November 30 with beer and art. Sounds pretty fun, right? Hanging out with friends, enjoying a drink together, and painting. For $30 per person, you will get a ceramic lighted figurine (10 to choose from), all the art supplies you would need, and a pint of your favorite Coastal County brew to sip on. Christmas Spectacular by University of Mobile November 20–23 Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Saraland, AL
If you are not afraid of an hour’s drive, the University of Mobile hosts the most spectacular Christmas performance in this part of the Gulf Coast. Tickets sell quickly, so you will want to buy yours now. This performance will not disappoint, with some of the best musical talent and vocal talent we have. This year, break away from all the hustle and bustle and let yourself be immersed in the magic. Disclaimer: I recognize that for some people, Christmas carries bad memories and it isn’t a holiday you want to celebrate. I personally have been there myself, but I encourage you to reclaim Christmas. The season can mean whatever you want it to mean. Make new memories and traditions.
