The Power of Pumpkin: Nourishing Your Hormones (and Your Whole Self) This Fall

Fall is in the air and I don’t know about you, but as soon as October 1 hits, I am searching for anything and everything pumpkin spice. Lattes, oatmeal, candles, soups… give it to me! It’s like this warm, melancholic, big hug feeling and I just want to soak it up. Am I the only one?

But, really, as the weather cools and the leaves start to change, there’s something comforting about slowing down and leaning into Fall flavors — and pumpkin always seems to steal the show! But beyond the cozy lattes and muffins, pumpkin (and its seeds) are actually nutritional powerhouses, especially when it comes to hormone health and energy. Amazing news!

Let’s be honest — as we move into our late 30s and 40s, hello perimenopause years, hormones are everything. They impact our energy, mood, metabolism, sleep, and even how we handle stress. And while there’s no magic supplement or quick fix, the way we feed our body truly makes a difference.

That’s where seasonal eating — and pumpkin — come in.

Why Seasonal Foods Matter

Our ancestors naturally ate with the seasons, not because it was trendy but because it made sense! Seasonal foods are fresher, more nutrient-dense, and often contain exactly what our bodies need during that time of year. So cool! Fall foods like pumpkin, squash, root vegetables, and leafy greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and grounding nutrients that support digestion and balance — exactly what we need as we transition out of Summer’s high energy, warmer, fast-paced months.

There’s even a practice called seed cycling, which focuses on pairing certain seeds (like pumpkin and flax) with different phases of a woman’s cycle to support hormonal balance. I’m fascinated by this, and if you want to learn more, here is a great article from Dr. Will Cole. While research on seed cycling itself is still emerging, what we do know is that these seeds are packed with nutrients that support hormone health, especially during perimenopause and beyond. *Fun fact: Seed cycling has been a way for many women to support natural treatment for PCOS!

Pumpkin Seeds: The Hidden Gem

Pumpkin seeds (also called pepitas) are loaded with zinc, magnesium, and healthy fats — all essential for hormone production and balance.

  • Zinc helps regulate hormones like progesterone and testosterone, supports immune health, and promotes healthy skin.

  • Magnesium is crucial for reducing stress, improving sleep, and calming the nervous system (a huge bonus if you tend to feel wired but tired).

  • Healthy fats — like the omega-3s found in pumpkin seeds — support cell membrane health, which directly affects how well your hormones communicate. Bonus: omega 3’s are great for heart health and supporting healthy cholesterol levels in the body.

As Dr. Josh Axe shared recently on his podcast with health expert Jess Berman, balancing your hormones through nutrition is less about restriction and more about restoration — adding back the foods that help your body function optimally. Eating for Energy

When you nourish your body with nutrient-rich foods — the kind that actually support your cellular health and mitochondria (the energy factories inside your cells) — you feel it. Your energy lasts longer. Your mood stabilizes. You don’t feel like you’re constantly running on caffeine and stress.

That’s what food as medicine really means. It’s not about perfection — it’s about paying attention.

How to Add Pumpkin Power to Your Fall Days!

Here are a few of my favorite simple, hormone-friendly ways to enjoy pumpkin this fall:

  • Pumpkin Spice Latte (the real kind): Blend coffee or matcha with a spoonful of pure pumpkin purée, almond milk, cinnamon, and a drizzle of honey. You’ll get antioxidants, fiber, and warmth — without the sugar crash. I’ve been putting it in my Matcha, too – get the recipe in my Sunday reset lineup here.

  • Pumpkin Energy Balls: Combine oats, almond butter, Vanilla protein powder (my faves here), Organic pumpkin purée, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, cinnamon, and a touch of maple syrup. Roll and freeze for an easy snack packed with healthy fats and fiber.

  • Pumpkin Seed Sprinkle: Toss roasted pumpkin seeds on salads, soups, avocado toast, or yogurt bowls for an extra crunch of zinc and magnesium.

The Bottom Line on Pumpkin

As we head into Fall, think of this season as an invitation to slow down and nourish from the inside out. Your hormones — and your energy — will thank you for it.

Because eating well isn’t about following trends or chasing perfection. It’s about learning how to work with your body, not against it. And sometimes, that starts with something as simple as a handful of pumpkin seeds! Easy peasy.

Cheers to Fall!
