This morning, I joined the Studer Community Institute (SCI) to witness a milestone moment for Pensacola — the groundbreaking of the new terminal expansion at Pensacola International Airport.
The energy on the tarmac was electric and not just from the sound of planes taxiing the runway behind us, but from the sense that our city’s growth is taking off in real time.
The expansion of Pensacola International Airport marks one of the largest capital investments in its history, adding five new gates, a modernized security checkpoint, and expanded concessions designed to elevate the traveler experience.
As Airport Director Matt Coughlin shared, “We’re the biggest airport from Jacksonville to New Orleans. Last year, we had over 3.1 million passengers — and on May 19, we hit a record-breaking 15,000 travelers in a single day. That’s three Wahoos Stadiums full in one day.”
Those numbers are more than statistics, I believe they represent the incredible momentum Pensacola is experiencing as both a destination and a place to call home. And for organizations like Studer Community Institute, that growth aligns perfectly with their mission.
“The expansion of Pensacola International Airport is more than a sign of physical growth—it’s a reflection of how our entire community is expanding,” said Katie Ballard, Executive Director, Studer Community Institute.
“We’re here today because we’re grateful for the partnership of the airport and their belief that growth matters deeply—not just in infrastructure, but in the people who call Pensacola home. Growth in their careers, in their small businesses, and in their capacity to dream bigger for what’s possible.”

From training business leaders to mentoring new entrepreneurs, SCI invests in the kind of development that sustains long-term community success. Because when businesses grow, jobs grow, and when jobs grow, so does the vibrancy of our city.
Today we stood alongside city officials, local business leaders, and community partners including Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves who described today’s groundbreaking as both a celebration and a challenge:
“We’ve been a victim of our own success,” said Reeves. “It’s been a wonderful problem to have, but one we must solve. This has been a massive team effort, and today’s the start of that effort coming to life. This groundbreaking is a symbol of our confidence in Pensacola’s growth.”
That growth is undeniable, and the airport’s expansion will help ensure Pensacola remains a hub for both visitors and residents. From creating new jobs during construction to attracting additional airlines, routes, and tourism revenue, the ripple effects of this project will touch every corner of our community.
As shovels hit the ground, it was impossible not to feel a wave of excitement of how far Pensacola has come, and how committed our leaders are to taking us even further. As Katie Ballard summed up,
“Growth—whether in infrastructure, business, or people—happens when we invest in our future together. And that is what the leadership at the airport is excellent at – partnering for growth.”
The Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program isn’t just about making travel easier. It’s about ensuring Pensacola continues to be a city where innovation thrives, opportunities expand, and the runway to a vibrant future just keeps getting longer.
