For our final Brave by Nature: Herds, Hooves & Heroes spotlight, we closed things out with a bang, well, more like a splash. This time, the Pensacola Police Department traded in their patrol cars for a zoo wagon and made their way to meet two of the Gulf Breeze Zoo’s most notorious residents: Tink and TikTok, a pair of American alligators named after the classic Peter Pan duo. While their ancient lineage dates back millions of years, Tink and Tiktok are two juvenile alligators who are part of the zoo’s animal encounters program.
Chief Kristen Brown, K9 Officer Abygael Abed, Officer William Roper and Detective Benjamin Gentry demonstrated what it means to be Brave By Nature.
Courage Meets Conservation
During the encounter, offciers got an up-close look at the strength, stealth, and survival skills of these apex predators and were even able to hold Tink. But they also learned that, just like our law enforcement officers, alligators play a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced and healthy. The message? Respect, awareness, and coexistence are key when sharing our waterways and backyards with Florida’s most famous reptile.
The encounter also provided valuable insight into the biology and behavior of American alligators. These reptiles have one of the most powerful bite forces in the animal kingdom, yet their jaws are so sensitive they can carry hatchlings in their mouths without harm. Alligators are opportunistic feeders, consuming fish, birds, small mammals, and even fruit. In captivity, they are often offered specially formulated biscuits that provide balanced nutrition, similar to their natural diet. The PPD would not recommend smelling the biscuits and would recommend washing your hands after tossing the biscuits.
Surprisingly, despite their size and strength, alligators don’t require large amounts of food, they can thrive on relatively small meals and often go days, or even weeks, between feedings.
A Community Campaign with Heart
The Herds, Hooves & Heroes campaign has showcased the courage of local law enforcement while highlighting the incredible wildlife we’re lucky to have in our community zoo. From slow-moving Galápagos tortoises to hungry rhinos and playful giraffes and now Florida’s iconic alligator, every encounter has revealed the common thread between our officers and the animals: resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to protecting their communities.
