Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve prayed for God to open or close the door?
Often times, I think we can get caught up in the prayer and don’t prepare ourselves for what is coming.
There have been numerous situations in my life where I’ve asked God for the writing on the wall to be so obvious that I can’t help but see it.
“God, will you use the big red sharpie for this one?”, I’ll ask.
Then, I’ll see the big red sharpie and question myself.. “Did that really say what I think it said? Maybe that isn’t what He means.”
God does not speak in maybe’s.
In other instances, typically when it is favorable or aligns with what I want, I’ll eagerly notice the smallest opening and take that as a green light for God wanting me to go.
God will make the open door obvious if that is the way He wants you to go.
One of my mentors told me once, “God doesn’t crack windows, we do.”
The idea of God being obvious when the door is open or closed always brings me to the story of Moses. God had been trying to communicate with Moses for a long time.
It wasn’t until Moses was stopped in his tracks by a burning bush that he truly was able to understand the message God was trying to deliver to him.
If it’s God’s will, it will be His way.
Then we have the Jonah moments. These are the moments where we see the way God is wanting us to go, and we walk the other way.
Every breath we take, every choice we make, and every prayer we pray is an opportunity for God to open or close a door.
Like Jonah, or the prodigal son, we have been forgiven for our lack of faith. Let this be encouragement to the one who has turned the other way!
Whatever door we get, God asks us to have faith.
As we grow in our faith, the doors become more obvious.
When we see a closed door, we won’t check to see if the key works. We will recognize that it is shut and we will walk away.
Open doors may lead to an unknown place, and still we walk in, dance with joy, just like the three men who walked into the fiery furnace that day. Despite the threats or fears of the unknown, we can trust that if God opened it, He plans to see us through to the other side.
Our lives will be filled with open and closed doors. If you are struggling with a maybe, this may be a good time to ask for the red sharpie.
May I offer you some encouragement this week? I often find myself standing in a room full of doors. Then, suddenly, I’ll feel as though I’m spinning on a lazy Susan, not able to see clearly which doors are opening or closing.
If this is the case for you, the ask isn’t about which door to choose, it’s about asking God to help slow you.
My hope is that life slows down when you find yourself seeking for an opening or closing. May God give you the clarity you need with FULL STOP red writing or a striking GO green.
