On Thursday, August 15th, Pensacola will celebrate and honor the children in our community with Cat Country Cares for Kids Radiothon, while raising funds for something truly life-changing—LIT Therapy—at Studer Family Children’s Hospital.
For children battling brain tumors and epilepsy, the path to healing can be overwhelming.
In many cases, traditional brain surgery has been the only option—an invasive, high-risk procedure that can require long hospital stays, cause significant neurological damage, and lead to months of recovery.
But thanks to groundbreaking technology, there’s now a safer, gentler alternative: Laser Interstitial Thermal (LIT) Therapy.
What is LIT Therapy?
In simple terms, LIT Therapy uses a precisely guided laser instead of a scalpel to target and destroy abnormal tissue in the brain. This procedure is performed while the patient is in a MRI, allowing for real time montoring.
Doctors can pinpoint the exact area causing seizures or harboring a tumor and can do so without having to open the skull.
This means:
- Less pain for our small but might patients
- Faster recovery time—often days instead of weeks or months, so they can get back to playing with their siblings
- Reduced hospital stays, allowing the precious children to sleep in their own beds
- Lower risk of complications, including less damage to healthy brain tissue
- Better overall outcomes for both their health and quality of life

Studer Family Children’s Hospital will be the only place in Pensacola where a child can receive this treatment once funds are raised at the radiothon. Without LIT Therapy, many local families would have to continue to travel hours—or even out of state—for care.
