What do a first responder and a tower of giraffes have in common? More than you’d think.
This week, Local Pulse Pensacola continues to team up with Gulf Breeze Zoo to spotlight some of our bravest community heroes—alongside a few of the Zoo’s most extraordinary residents.
Second up: The Escambia County Fire Rescue. Chief Williams, Lt. Gradia and Capt. Joel Richardson met a tower of giraffes for a one-of-a-kind experience.
From feeding them their favorite snacks to learning about their care and conservation, the Captain and his team discovered how strength, teamwork, and a protective nature aren’t just found in humans.
Here’s some of the commonalities we learned about:
- Elevated Vantage Point:
- Giraffes, with their impressive height, have a natural advantage in spotting predators or potential danger from afar in their natural environment.
- Escambia County Fire Rescue utilizes various methods to gain an elevated vantage point during emergencies (e.g., ladders, aerial platforms) to survey the scene and assess the situation effectively.
- Unique Communication & Coordination:
- Giraffes are believed to communicate in ways that are still being studied, including body language, infrasonic noises, and potential nighttime humming, suggesting a complex social structure despite not always being overtly vocal to humans.
- Fire rescue teams rely on sophisticated communication and coordination systems, including radio communication, hand signals, and pre-determined protocols, to ensure efficient and effective responses in high-stress situations.
- Social & Collaborative:
- Giraffes are highly social animals that form herds and exhibit complex social behaviors like forming years-long relationships, shared childcare (crèches), and close bonds.
- Fire rescue teams are inherently collaborative and rely on strong teamwork, mutual support, and communication to operate effectively and achieve their shared goals.
- Focus on Safety (Their Own & Others’):
- Giraffes use their height and other senses to be vigilant against predators and protect their calves.
- Fire rescue teams prioritize the safety of both themselves and those they are rescuing, emphasizing safety procedures and training to minimize risks.
