In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive. – Acts 20:35
I believe generous people are happy people. In the Greek language of the New Testament blessing can be translated as happiness. In my own journey, some of the happiest folks I’ve met have demonstrated joy-filled generosity. There is something to be said when life is lived for the goal of giving more than receiving.
Amanda MacMillan, a journalist for Nature Communications, provided data from a study at the University of Zurich over giving vs. receiving. 50 people received $100 in a span of a few weeks. Half were asked to spend it all on themselves while the other half were asked to spend it on someone else. In this study, a functional MRI scan was done to measure activity in 3 regions of the brain associated with social behavior, generosity, and decision-making. Their study found in the brain activity higher levels of happiness and altruism with those asked to give away the money.
It is indeed more blessed to give than to receive.
As a Christ-follower, I believe generosity points others to Jesus. Giving reflects the treasure of our hearts. One author adds, “When you leave this world, will you be known as one who accumulated treasures on earth that you couldn’t keep? Or will you be recognized as one who invested treasures in heaven that you couldn’t lose?” – Randy Alcorn, The Treasure Principle, p. 49.
As I look at my life, I want to be remembered as one that gave more than accumulated. I must remember the stuff of my life will not go with me to glory. My faith prompts me to glorify my Redeemer with a life of generosity and selflessness.
Pastor J.D. Greear writes, We should be offering God a blank check with our lives, instead we simply give him the equivalent of a gift card.”
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7
Through generosity, we can help people see the greatest treasure no money can ever come close to in comparison. His Name is Jesus.

Give to a local charity today.
Give time to someone today.
Give wisdom and encouragement today.
Generosity is a great way to approach today.
