Self Love, Below the Surface Kind

Self-love is one of the most priceless gifts we can offer ourselves. Ironically, loving ourselves costs us more than we are typically willing to pay.

We will spend hundreds of dollars to satiate our loved ones with experiences, candies, and cards to express the love we possess. You had just enough to put gas in their tank, while yours has been idling on “E” for longer than you would like to admit.

The unfortunate reality of our culture is that “treating yourself” has become an effort we put in for others. We want to be liked, loved, and cherished. Therefore, we will invest in the materials that make us acceptable to society and “loveable” in our relationships. I’ve got a theory that the love our soul demands is much deeper than the surface of our skin or the material luxuries we often indulge in.

The kind of self-love I am referring to in this article is not the typical “treat yo self” love that the media and cultural trends around us have coaxed us into believing works.

Don’t get me wrong—if you look good, you feel good. I stand behind being presentable, looking your best to feel your best, and all the talented artists in the beauty world. The love you invest in yourself will naturally glow from the inside out, only adding value to the existing methods you may have.

This is the self-love that everyone needs, no matter what kind of lifestyle you lead.

Self Love, Deeper Than the Surface Kind

A lack of self-love looks like chronic exhaustion, increased susceptibility to illness, stress, and a continuous battle with anxiety. I’d not be qualified to share had I not experienced all of these symptoms at some point along my journey. Since getting a better grip on the self-love I’d been lacking, I’ve incorporated daily habits of checking in and seeing what I have to give.

There is no rhythm, method, or specific technique. If you ask me, finding the formula for the self-love you need is the best part of the whole experience. After reading through this list below, I hope you’ll feel encouraged to incorporate a new habit to help your love cup overflow!

Soul Filling Self Love:

  • Write/Journal gratitude
  • Spend time reading encouraging words (the bible, poetry, blogs, the Local Pulse)
  • Listen to upbeat music (worship and reggae are good places to start)
  • Connect via text/call with someone you love
  • Take a walk in nature (Remove shoes to unlock an extra level)
  • Spend time with life-giving people
  • Cook/Eat a healthy meal
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Drink more water and less caffeine

The more time we spend with ourselves, addressing our needs, the more loving we will show up for others. Incorporating small self-love habits will do wonders for your spirit, improve your relationships, and positively impact your ability to withstand the attention our world demands.

You are worthy of the love you share with others! Take time during this holiday weekend to show yourself the love you deserve. The people you pour into will find greater value in the quality of your love over what comes from your empty cup any day.
