Winter turned bitterly cold in January bringing record snowfall, but with any luck, a reticulated giraffe will soon alert the Gulf Coast to an early spring arrival.
Kenya took the helm last year at the Gulf Breeze Zoo’s inaugural Kenya Day festivities and outshone her world-famous weather-prognosticating counterpart, Punxsutawney Phil.
The second annual Kenya Day will take place on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 9:30 a.m. at the giraffe exhibit at the Gulf Breeze Zoo. Kenya will again not only be predicting whether there will be six more weeks of winter, but also the winner of the upcoming Super Bowl.
“Kenya made accurate weather and Super Bowl predictions last year and she is now the official Groundhog Day ambassador for the Gulf Coast, said Cassidy Mazzone, Gulf Breeze Zoo Park Director. “And let’s be honest, she’s a lot more fun to see than Punxsutawney Phil.”
The proceedings will be streamed live on the Gulf Breeze Zoo Facebook page, affording fans around the world the chance to watch Kenya the Giraffe make her predictions. Kenya will predict whether the public can expect six more weeks of winter, or an early spring. And she will also predict the winner of the upcoming Super Bowl. Super Bowl LIX is scheduled to be played on Feb. 9, 2025 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles go head-to-head. The public can also view the ceremony in-person with admission to the Zoo.
As part of Zoofari Parks, the Gulf Breeze Zoo, along with the Alabama Safari Park, Texas Zoofari Park and the Virginia Safari Park, is dedicated to wildlife conservation through public education, captive breeding programs, habitat preservation and providing financial aid and assistance to projects in the field through the Zoofari Parks Conservation Grants (ZPCG) program.
