Escambia County residents are encouraged to stay home and stay off the roadways Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 as snow and ice are expected to create hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service in Mobile has Escambia County under a Winter Storm Warning beginning Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 6 a.m. through 6 a.m. Wednesday.
“Our message is simple: Stay home and stay off the roadways,” Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore said. “The safety of our residents is our top priority, and road conditions will be unsafe for drivers over the next couple of days due to snow and ice. It is not worth the risk – please stay home and stay safe.”
As a former Midwesterner, I have had my fair share of snow days — so, here are 10 things to do tomorrow that do not involve any driving.
1) Go on a cold girl walk. We have all heard of The Hot Girl Walk — a fitness trend that encourages people to go for a daily walk while practicing mindfulness and positive thinking. A cold girl walk is the same, but involves layering every ridiculous clothing item you have until you look like a walking pile of blankets.
2) Make refrigerator soup. Maybe you already bought all the ingredients to make one of the 1,527 recipes you have saved on Instagram. Maybe you forgot and that’s okay too. Refrigerator soup is a soup made from ingredients in your fridge, like leftover vegetables, broth, and seasonings. It’s a versatile dish that can be customized to use up all the ingredients you already have. Get creative!
3) Bake. We know you didn’t use all the ingredients you bought for Christmas cookies. Better late than never.
4) Clean out your closets. It’s time to purge! A snow day is a perfect opportunity to clean out your closet, as you’re likely stuck indoors with some extra time to tackle a task that might otherwise feel daunting. Your future self will thank you. And if you’re anything like me, more closet room is a perfect excuse to shop.
5) Binge watch your favorite series. Rewatch all the Harry Potters, restart Game of Thrones, heck, rot your brain and watch all 100 episodes of Love Island. Today is the day to couch potato it up, judgement free!
6) At home spa day. Draw the bath, grab your bath salts, face masks, nail polish and every other fun stocking stuffer you’ve received over the years and bring the spa to you. Make yourself some hot tea and you may as well be at the Ritz Carlton.
7. Get lost in a book. How many books have been staring at you from the bookshelf? Pick one and finish it in a day! Have you ever read an entire book in a day? It feels like a massive accomplishment. Tomorrow is the perfect day to do it.
8. Dance party. Dreamt of going viral on Instagram or Facebook or TikTok (It’s back now, right)? Welp — today is the day. Learn the moves or make up your own, record the dance and give me credit and a cut when it goes viral. Seriously, you have all day to learn it and my sources say cabin fever is the perfect way to get the creative juices flowing.
9. Take a nap. That’s it. Sometimes a simple nap is taken for granted. And, if we do get snow, the silence a snowfall provides is like no other.
10. Play in the snow! We live in Florida so this will be in the history books if the forecast comes true. You don’t need to drive anywhere to simply walk outside and enjoy the beauty of a winter snow. Just, for the love of all things holy, don’t drive and don’t wear your flip flops!
Stay cozy, Pensacola.
