Enjoy the Game with this Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Buffalo Chicken Dip Recipe
Fall is here, and you know what that means—football season is in full swing! Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just here for the food and fun, tailgating is a time-honored tradition that brings people together to celebrate and indulge. But let’s face it, most tailgate spreads include snacks that are high in empty calories, packed with processed ingredients, and lacking in nutritional value.
The good news? You can still enjoy your favorite game-day treats without sacrificing your health goals! I love this delicious, nutritious twist on a tailgate classic: Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Buffalo Chicken Dip. This dip is creamy, spicy, and satisfying—everything you crave on game day without feeling like you blew your health goals!
Why Choose Healthier Tailgate Recipes?
Before we dive into the recipe, let’s talk about why it’s important to have some healthier options at your tailgate (or football party). Traditional tailgate foods, while delicious, can leave you feeling sluggish and bloated, not to mention throwing off your wellness goals. By creating healthier versions of your favorite dishes, you can enjoy the fun while keeping your energy up and staying on track with your lifestyle. Plus, when you bring a dish that caters to these more common dietary restrictions, like gluten-free and dairy-free, you make sure everyone has something they can enjoy!
The VIP: Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Buffalo Chicken Dip
This buffalo chicken dip (inspired by one of my favorite go-to Paleo recipe sites, Paleo Running Momma) is a crowd-pleaser that packs all the flavor of the classic dish but uses wholesome ingredients that are better for your body. It’s perfect for dipping veggies, gluten-free crackers, or even using as a topping for a game-day salad.

Ingredients
- 2.5 cups cooked, shredded chicken (you can use a store-bought rotisserie chicken for convenience)
- 1 cup Paleo mayo (homemade or store-bought like Primal Kitchen or Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo) – I love this homemade mayo recipe
- 1/3 cup hot sauce (we used Louisiana Hot Sauce, just ensure it works for your dietary needs)
- 1/3 Cup coconut cream (the top part of can of coconut chilled milk, makes it thick and creamy) – you can also add some nutritional yeast for a dairy-free “cheesy” flavor
- 1 tbsp grass fed butter or ghee
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 1/2 small yellow onion (chopped)
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tbsp dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Chopped green onions or parsley (optional, for garnish)
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (200°C) and lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish or a similar size dish.
- Heat butter or ghee in skillet, med to high heat: Saute onion and garlic until tender – set aside.
- Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the shredded chicken, mayo, hot sauce, coconut cream, onion powder, garlic and onions, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well until all the ingredients are fully mixed.
- Transfer to baking dish: Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the dip is hot and bubbly around the edges. (I finished with 2 minutes on broil)
- Garnish and serve: Remove the dip from the oven and let it cool slightly. You can sprinkle with chopped green onions or parsley to your liking. Serve with your favorite dippers like celery sticks, cucumber slices, bell pepper strips, or gluten free crackers. **side note, if you have leftovers, you can top over a baked sweet potato or serve with a salad on a week night for an easy protein packed dinner!
Tailgating Tips for a Healthier Spread
- Offer a variety of dippers: Think outside of chips! Chopped fresh veggie sticks, baked sweet potato chips, and gluten-free crackers are great for dipping and add extra nutrition.
- Prep in advance: This dip can be made ahead and reheated, making it perfect for game day. It also travels well if you’re heading to a tailgate party.
- Balance the menu: Include lighter options like fresh salads, fruit, and grilled chicken or steak skewers to accompany heartier dishes.
- Stay active: Incorporate some light activities, like tossing a football or playing a quick game of corn hole, to keep the energy up and the fun going. I personally love some music and dancing in the kitchen! (dance off during half time? yes, please!)
- Hydrate: Keep water on hand, especially if you’re enjoying adult beverages. 🙂 Try flavoring your water with fresh fruits or herbs for a fun mocktail.
This Dairy and Gluten Free Buffalo Chicken Dip is sure to be a hit at your next tailgate, proving that nutritious can also mean delicious! I hope you enjoy it. Cheers to Fall!
