After my very first SUP (stand-up paddleboard) Yoga class, my key takeaway was that SUP yoga “gently forces” us to be mindful. The focus is less on how the pose looks and more on balance, how it feels in your body and not falling in — but also knowing it’s completely fine if you do! It’s refreshing and it’s good for the soul to laugh at yourself every so often.
I first met Laura Doiron, Founder and Instructor of Pensacola Beach Yoga (PBY), at Gallery Night several years ago. Laura and her family had just moved to Pensacola from Oregon and we briefly spoke about the different yoga studios in town. This is when I learned of her background in yoga.
Laura Doiron began teaching yoga on the sandy beaches of California over a decade ago, where she quickly recognized the profound impact of practicing in nature and the potential for true and easeful connection it brings. Laura has taught thousands of studio classes since that time, but has continuously been drawn back to the ocean where presence is simplified, serenity is effortless, and inspiration is abounding.
”After moving to Pensacola in late 2022 and experiencing the stunning beaches of NWFL, the vision of PBY began to emerge. In February 2023, Pensacola Beach Yoga was officially established with an intention to bring the local wellness community together and to offer a place of belonging for anyone seeking connection,” said Laura.
“It’s a sanctuary without walls – a place where beauty is the teacher, the waves are the soundtrack – and where individuals can unite with nature’s rhythms to connect more deeply within themselves.”
I was drawn to PBY because they truly invite individuals from all walks of life to come together in support of our collective wellbeing. Pensacola Beach Yoga was born out of a love for the ocean, a belief in the transformative power of yoga, and a desire to create authentic community connection.
After a successful year of Pensacola Beach yoga, SUP yoga was born out of the same principles. The only difference is you are on a paddle board! PBY partnered with Key Sailing to bring the first organized paddleboard yoga class to Pensacola Beach.
So what’s the difference between regular yoga and SUP yoga? Besides the obvious of using a flotation device on the water instead of a yoga mat on the flat ground, there are a few differences.
SUP yoga is an experience. It creates an atmosphere where you can work at your own pace, not be overly flexible and go outside of your comfort zone. Although it does come with its own challenges, it also gives you the opportunity to have fun, be silly and laugh, which is not as common in a traditional studio. Falling in and finding your balance is all part of the journey — egos are best left on the shore.
So what do you need to bring to your first SUP Yoga class?
What do I wear?
Bathing suit or workout wear? A bathing suit or workout top with shorts is a great option. Yoga pants and a tank top or long sleeve are great for cooler weather. I opted for a quick drying sports bra, biker shorts and my swimsuit underneath.
Do you need your own paddleboard?
Bring your own board and save some money, but if you don’t have one or just want to opt for convenience like I did, Key Sailing provides paddle boards for class goers.
Cost:
- $40 per person
- $30 PBY Community Pricing – must show local ID upon arrival
- $15 Class only – BYOB (bring your own board)
What if I float away?
This was my initial worry when envisioning the concept, especially with how choppy the sound can get. Fear not, Key Sailing provides an anchor from a 10-pound weight tied to a rope with a carabiner that clips onto the paddleboard. This ensures the paddleboards stay in place and maintain their distance from each other.
Do I need experience?
Whether you’re an advanced yogi on land or have never taken a yoga class before, there are options for everyone. PBY classes are always beginner-friendly and the SUPY class is no different. Upon arrival Laura will provide instructions on paddling basics and lead a class with multiple options for all different skill levels.
If you’re looking for summer activities, don’t skip this one! Grab a friend, get out on the water, practice mindfulness, laugh and support multiple local businesses in the process. SUPY classes are held on select Saturdays (June through November), with an intention to add a second weekly class next year. Not ready for SUPY, but want to try yoga? Check our Laura’s weekly class schedule on Pensacola Beach here. Need another incentive> Attend any of PBY classes and you’ll receive 10% off Bear Fruit Bowls on Pensacola Beach.
Happy Paddling and Namaste Pensacola!
