In 2013, Zverev competed with players from all over the world in the Pensacola Futures Tennis Championship, a USTA Men’s Pro Circuit event. Now named the Pensacola Pro Tennis Championship, the tournament was part of the 2024 USTA Pro Men’s 25K Circuit.

Tournament director Skip Vogelsang said many young tennis stars have launched after playing in the Pensacola tournament.

“Zverev, now 27, was just 16 when he played in Pensacola and ranked as the number one junior in the world for 17 and under — four years later he was playing in the U.S. Open,” said Vogelsang. “This shows you the level of play we’re getting here in Pensacola and where these young athletes are headed.”

Ray Palmer, President & CEO of Pensacola Sports said this year’s tournament had many young hopefuls.

“When you come out to the Pensacola Pro Tennis Championship at Roger Scott you’re seeing major tournament champions of the future, right here in our backyard,” said Palmer. “Other notable player who have risen to stardom include Dennis Shapovalov, Felix Auger Aliassime and Jack Sock. It’s amazing to think that Pensacola has played a part in launching these young athletes’ careers.”

Next year’s Pensacola Pro Tennis Championship will be held May 12 – 18, 2024 at Roger Scott Tennis Center.
