Let’s Give Them Something To Smile About!

Did you know that today is National Smile Day? This is one of those national holidays that includes everybody. Our hope is that this article will turn your frown upside down and give you something to smile about today.

If you’ve got a face, you’ve got a smile. Let’s talk about why smiling is worth your while!

Smiling Is Contagious

Picture this; you are rushing to get home and stop at the grocery store. The lines are long and the carts are heavy. Suddenly you see a precious cashier in the form of a sweet old lady. She smiles at you and asks “Did you find everything you were looking for today?” Unless you are a Scrooge, her smile and kind words seem to lighten the weight of the long workday.

Smiling is a natural response that we are born with. I remember the first few days after bringing my daughter home from the hospital. Lots of sleeping, pooping, and eating took place. For any mothers out there, you know that the early days of motherhood can be almost debilitating. Just when you think you’ve hit your limit, your child smiles, and the exhaustion you are feeling seems to be a little less draining. Even if the smile is happening while pooping, sleeping, or eating; a smile from your child is a sign that you are winning.

Smiling Is Easier Than Frowning

Did you know that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile? Meaning that our faces are designed to work in favor of smiling. God knew what He was doing when He gave us a smile. His goal was not for us to be grumpy and loathing. He wants us to have joy in our hearts and show off that abundance by smiling!

If there is nothing else you have to offer today, your smile has the potential to go a long way. Many years ago, a friend and I made up a game that would challenge us to see how many people we could get to smile and wave.

The game was called “Happy People”. We would go for a bike ride, skate, or walk on the beach, and the goal of the game was to see how many people our smiles and waves could reach. If the person smiled and waved back, the goal of our game was achieved. This game is low maintenance, easy to play, and totally free. All you need is a smile and a desire to share it with somebody!

Smiling Can Boost Your Confidence

I can guarantee that you look much better when you take a photo or greet someone with a smile than if you were to frown or appear grumpy. Confidence can be a sticky topic to unpack and is dependent on many things. However, a simple smile has the ability to boost your confidence and distract you from a streak of self-loathing.

“If you look good, you feel good.” Your smile is unique to you and it is worth showing. Science has proved that the simple act of smiling releases dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin throughout your body. In common terms, this means that every time you smile, you are getting a cocktail of feel-good hormones flushed through your system.

My challenge for you is to get into the habit of intentionally smiling. If smiling isn’t natural for you, try standing in front of the mirror and see how smiling begins to affect you after a week or two.

Who knew something as simple as smiling could have such an impact? From my experience, smiling has been a powerful healing tool. My hope is that you recognize your smile is special and feel compelled to share your unique gift with the world around you!
