Local Pulse’s Weekend Top 10

This weekend I’m giving you nine local events plus a day trip to the Baldwin County Strawberry Festival! I grew up in a small town and can tell you nothing more charming or endearing than a good old-fashioned festival. And hello! They have strawberry shortcake…just a 35-45 minute drive west from Pensacola in Loxley, Alabama.


BIG SCREEN ON THE BAYOU Friday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Bayview Park. The evening’s feature is TOP GUN: MAVERICK! Bring your blanket, chairs, family, and friends to enjoy a free outdoor movie on a jumbo screen at Bayview Park overlooking the beautiful Bayou Texar near the Community Center. Arrive early to reserve your spot and enjoy pop-up vendors, movie trivia, and food truck fare! Food vendors will be open by 5 pm and the movie rolls at 6:30 pm. This event is brought to you by the East Hill Neighborhood Association.

PENSACOLA BEACH FIREFIGHTERS CHALLENGE 2024 Friday, April 12 at 5 p.m. – Saturday, April 13 ending at 5 p.m. Hey Firefighters! And Civilians! Test your skill, strength, and stamina on the sugar-white sands of Pensacola Beach. Register a team or challenge yourself and do the course solo. The Pensacola Beach Firefighters Challenge is a great family-friendly event to build camaraderie, compete, have fun, and win! PENSACOLA ARTS MARKET Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Explore over 50 booths featuring handcrafted goods, stunning art pieces, vintage clothing & decor, lush plants, and delectable delights from food trucks. Mark your calendars for the 2nd & 4th Saturday of each month and immerse yourself in the happy atmosphere at Cordova Square! 1101 N 12th Avenue, at the corner of E Gonzales St & 12th Ave in the East Hill neighborhood.

BALDWIN COUNTY STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14 at the Loxley Municipal Park. The Baldwin County Strawberry Festival is a much-anticipated local tradition held annually at Loxley Municipal Park. Every year, visitors join us from all around the Southeast to enjoy special events, car shows, music, crafts, and, of course, strawberry shortcakes! THE EAST HILLBILLIES Saturday, April 13, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. at Calvert’s in the Heights. Calvert’s is a family-owned English-themed neighborhood restaurant & bar with one of the best views in Pensacola! Andrea Housand, Pat Meusel, Brent Burton, and Jeff Glickman make up the East Hillbillies and play cover tunes from a wide range of rock and pop music. They play all your favorite music from the last 5 decades. Sadly, none of them are hillbillies and they don’t have a drummer. Gather a group of friends for some good food and great music. Who knows? This four-piece might become the great friends you soon share good food with.

ATMOSPHERE Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at Vinyl Music Hall. Tour De Friends Part Deux with special guests HEBL and NOFUN! For over two decades, Atmosphere has maintained a course of rigorous output, releasing over two dozen studio albums, EPs, and collaborative side projects in as many years. Slug has proven masterful at storytelling and writing compelling narratives, leaving a trail of his influence while paying homage to the rappers and songwriters who helped shape him. Ant has skillfully molded the soundtracks with inspiration from soul, funk, rock, reggae, and the wizardry of hip-hop’s pioneering DJs and producers, creating his trademark sounds while providing the pulse for songs about life, love, stress, and setbacks. GRITS AND GREENS Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at The Handlebar. This powerful four-piece is described as rock and roll with a soulful and jam-heavy delivery. Fronted by Ryann McGhee on vocals, guitar, and keyboard and accompanied by husband, Jesse McGhee, on slide guitar and vocals. Jake Noble on bass and Jackson Bounds on drums and vocals tie this group of four together. PENSACOLA CIVIC BAND Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at The Saenger Theatre. The Pensacola Civic Band is a full symphonic wind ensemble performing wind literature of the highest caliber. The Pensacola Civic Band is an organization of adult instrumental musicians who want to continue performing in a band after high school and/or college. The band’s membership runs from 80-100 members each season. PCB is an outlet for adult musicians from many walks of life including music educators, amateur/professional musicians, physicians and medical professionals, accountants, lawyers, and many more professions. WHAT THE SHUCK! Sunday, April 14 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Wisteria Tavern. Oysters and live music by the Dead Flowers. Our favorite skilled chefs from What the Cluck will work their magic to bring you the best, grilled oysters available. 11th ANNUAL MEN WHO COOK Sunday, April 14 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Blue Wahoos Stadium. This event benefits the Pace Center for Girls in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. This fundraiser showcases the culinary talents of non-professional male chefs as they prepare everything from appetizers to desserts, attracting crowds of over 400 guests in its first 10 years! Showing Pace Girls that men can be positive, supportive figures in their lives, 30 non-professional male chef teams from our community will compete to impress several local Professional female chefs who will select winners from each category.
