Express Yourself, It’ll Heal Your Soul

What tethers you to the deepest areas of your soul?

The place where drops of truth collect,
where precious prayers are spoken,
and the faintest whispers are heard.

How do you find a way to anchor there?
A way to hold up against the high seas,
and lock down during tumultuous storms?

How can I be more like the roots of a tree?
Intertwined deep within the soil,
receiving all of the necessary nutrients that surround me.

It feels like a tightrope or hammock.
Which one is connecting me?
Is my adrenaline heightened or am I gently relaxing?

I live in a limbo of wonder, you know.
Wonder of how our deepest truth, our desires,
feel like they are burrowed underground one moment,
other times wishing they weren’t so exposed.

Desire can be so deeply rooted,
it feels hard to uncover what I’m searching for,
before that moment of curiosity is over.

Floating by.
Crashing into the next wave.
These thoughts are lost in the wind,
only to return another day.

Other times it’s right there.
Easy to discover.
Like tripping over the root protruding from the ground.
The obvious ant hill,
a mount built with excellence.

So clearly present and profound.

Like a freed kite or a broken fishing line,
the thought suddenly breaks free,
another fleeting phenomenon of time.

Back to where we once started.
Working our way through,
and making choices that evolve the narrative,
uniquely designed and directed for you.

Once upon a time when a memory was made,
I’m suddenly reminded of a field of flowers where I once lay.
Dreaming of connection, truth, and prayer.
For it to be quickly swooped away again,
a moment of thought gone in thin air.

Often when life gets the best of me, I express myself through freeform poetry. These written words erupt like a song I’ve known for ages. One that’s been stored safely in my memory. All it takes is a single note or familiar tune to quickly remind me.

These moments of flowing freely with words remind me of the Psalms of David. David expresses himself through songs inspired by God’s work in him. One of my favorites is Psalm 23.

What is your form of expression? Where do you spill out when you are filled to the brim of your mental or emotional capacity?

Is it singing loudly in the car to a song that makes you feel something?
Maybe taking a paintbrush to a canvas and letting each stroke do the communicating.
How about calling a friend or family member to share how you are doing?
Some prefer walking, running, or expressing themselves through exercising.

We all deserve a time and place for expressing ourselves. God purposely made us to be creative and expressive beings. My challenge for you, as you read this today, is to take a moment to express yourself creatively.

This may be new or uncomfortable to do. However, it is through these holy moments of connecting with your soul that reveal the truest version of you.

Be kind to yourself, be patient with what you are feeling, and listen to what your soul may be in need of expressing.
