The Quentin Cooper Liver Life 5k

It was a normal January day for a normal Gulf Breeze family. Quentin was a typical high school kid with friends, an active social life, and a member of the student government association at Gulf Breeze High School. He was the kid who never met a stranger and could carry on deep conversations with anyone who would lend an ear.

Until January 24, 2011.

Trina, Quentin’s mom, noticed a slight yellow tint in his eyes so she thought it would be best to have him checked out. That’s when normal ended.

After being sent directly to the children’s hospital for tests, Quentin was diagnosed with Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer.

The fight began.

His family, community, friends, and school surrounded him with love and resources to help this family fight a long, hard battle. The Quentin Cooper Liver Life 5k* was created; a quiet little beach town community of Gulf Breeze, Fl came together and showed everyone what it was like to fight together.

Quentin fought for over two years before God completely healed him by calling him home to heaven. Every year since, Quentin’s family has carried the torch and continued to help families who are fighting their own battle of childhood cancer.

Their recipient this year is a precious little girl named Charlotte.

On December 30, 2020, Charlotte’s mom, Jordan McKinney, took her in for a typical 15-month checkup only to find out a short six hours later that she had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The next two and a half years consisted of countless doctor appointments, overnight hospital stays, and more trips to the ER than they could count. In the spring of 2023, after a very short remission, the cancer was back, and the fight continues. Throughout 2023 Charlotte was selected for a clinical trial in Philadelphia. This radical treatment using one’s own T-Cells to fight their cancer is one that we are all hopeful will give Charlotte’s family the ability to celebrate her end of treatment and allow her to experience the rest of her life cancer free.

With cancer treatments, doctor visits, and traveling expenses, families fighting cancer experience quite the financial hardship. The Quentin Cooper Liver Life 5k’s mission is to come alongside families during this time by providing them with a monetary donation to help offset some of these expenses.
