I’ve posted about it before, but I love my Kia Sorento. After driving a much larger SUV for years, I loved switching over to a more compact, efficient, and sportier vehicle.

But after you’ve purchased your new car, what are the best tips for maintaining it to make it last for the long haul?

Here are 5 tips for keeping one of the largest investments you’ll make in tip-top shape:

  • Tip #1: Tire maintenance! Keeping an eye on your tires impacts the wear and tear on the entire vehicle. Here’s what to look for:
    • Tire pressure – Check your tires’ pressure once a month. Underinflated tires are a big problem and affect fuel efficiency.
    • Tire condition – Inspect your tires regularly – at the same time you’re checking the tread – for any signs of bulges or bald spots. If you spot any of these danger signs, have the tire replaced as soon as possible.
    • Tire rotation – Make sure you rotate the tires every 5,000-8,000 miles.
    • Uneven wear – Uneven wear indicates a problem with wheel alignment.
    • Spare tire – Don’t forget about the spare tire. Check your spare at least once a month!
  • Tip #2: Check Fluids.
    • Changing the oil
    • Check brake, coolant, and/or antifreeze, transmission, washer, and power steering fluids.
  • Tip #3: Check the Battery.
    • You can have your favorite maintenance person check it or pick up a handy battery tester at your local car supply place.
  • Tip #4: Check the Lights.
    • This is an easy run-through – just turn your headlights, low beams, and all signal indicators on and off and have them replaced if they are not in working order.
  • Tip #5: Get an Annual Inspection.
    • Taking your car to a reputable mechanic for a full inspection is very important for the upkeep of your car. This will make sure a minor problem doesn’t turn into a major headache and expense. They will check for filters, brake pad life, all the fluids, and the general status of the car.
