Pariel’s Pelican Day Prediction

Mermaids in Paradise Pelican at Palafox Pier.

Do you want to hear some good news?

A groundhog is a rodent. And we do not have to listen to him. Why? Because we are Florida and we do what we want. This morning the little chunk of fur woke up in the “country of somewhere, not in Florida” and attempted to ruin our lives.

It holds absolutely no bearing on our reality. We have the beach, and the sunshine and the truth. Okay, sometimes we have the fog, but that is not the point.

The truth is this: the average temperature for February in Pensacola is generally in the neighborhood of 62°F to 67°F, rarely falling below 51°F or exceeding 74°F. That is a daily average of 64°F.

The daily low temperatures for February in Pensacola range from 45°F to 51°F, rarely falling below 32°F or exceeding 63°F.

March temperatures are even better, with a daily high ranging from 67°F to 72°F, rarely falling below 58°F or exceeding 79°F.

March daily lows are 51°F to 57°F and rarely fall below 38°F or exceeding 67°F.

Chuck that in your daily wood chucking count, Phil from Gobbler’s Knob.

From this February 2 forward, I propose we replace the groundhog with a pelican I’ve dubbed Pariel (get it?), Pensacola’s Mermaid Pelican. No more dysfunctional roller coaster with a groundhog. No, our beloved Pariel will forecast that February and March will always be moderate.

Maybe you’re a traditionalist and can’t break the Groundhog Day legend, but I’ll put my trust in a Pensacola pelican covered in mermaids and bright colors. A pelican who never sees her shadow, because she is always looking ahead.
