In a recent letter, Congressman Matt Gaetz announced that Walton, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Escambia counties have endorsed an increase in the Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) for our military service members. “When you wear stars and stripes in service of the United States of America and you need financial assistance for housing while stationed, assistance should be there,” says Congressman Gaetz in his letter.

Rep. Gaetz said that his team had spent the past year collaborating with local communities in Florida’s 1st District to study the BAH. Consequently, they discovered that the BAH rate was insufficient to cover the housing cost for the service members in the district. With this deficiency in mind, the office of Rep. Gaetz added a provision in the NDAA for the fiscal year 2022, requiring the Department of Defense (DoD) to produce a report on housing and the BAH rates in Northwestern Florida due by Spring 2022.

Having learned of this discrepancy, the Air Force gave a temporary increase in the BAH rates for service members who apply for it. From this, Rep. Gaetz’s team drafted a Resolution and approached the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors, the Pensacola Association of Realtors, and the Navarre Board of Realtors for their input in December 2021.

Upon receipt of the approval from the realtor organizations, the team reached out to several county commissioners to include Mel Ponder (District 5, Okaloosa County), Bob Cole (District 2, Santa Rosa County), Danny Glidewell (District 2, Walton County), and Jeff Bergosh (District 1, Escambia County) for their support and input. From this, all four counties have passed their resolutions. Each resolution tells the DoD in a unanimous voice that the constituents of FL-01 fully support the Military Mission line, along with the service members that support the military mission.

Gaetz says he is “excited to see significant improvement in the quality of life for the armed service members.”
