Gulf Islands National Seashore, state parks free for Veterans Day

Entrance to the Gulf Islands National Seashore along with all 174 of Florida’s state parks will be free on Friday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.

National parks throughout the country annually waive entrance fees on Veteran’s Day in gratitude for the service and sacrifice of those who have served in the armed forces, officials said. All national seashore areas, including Fort Pickens, will offer free entry on Friday.

All Gulf Islands National Seashore park areas and visitor centers will be open for their normal hours, officials said.

Florida Governor Rick Scott announced on Thursday that state parks would also offer free admission on Friday in recognition of all those who have served and are currently serving in the U.S. military.

“Honoring our military members and veterans is an incredible priority across our state,” Scott said. “This Veterans Day, I encourage all Floridians to take a moment to recognize our many military heroes and thank them for their selfless service. I also hope families and visitors will take this opportunity to visit the best state parks in the country free of charge and enjoy the beautiful state our veterans have worked so hard to protect.”

State parks in the area include Big Lagoon State Park, Perdido Key State Park, Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park, Blackwater River State Park, Henderson Beach State Park, and others.

In Alabama, entrance to state parks will be free for veterans only from Nov. 11-14.
