Thies, a first generation Cuban-American, says he is dismayed by party politics and a dysfunctional U.S. Congress.

Thies filed for office late last month as an independent candidate with no party affiliation. Up until last year, Thies was the CEO of Cloud View Technologies in Okaloosa County, a cloud based software firm which was acquired by Books International of Dulles, Va.

He and his wife, Lea, a nurse practitioner and Air Force veteran, have four children.

Thies said he would work to sustain the military presence in Northwest Florida but also wants to diversify the region’s economy.
